French Language Services, Cottingham was established by Ray Stow MA in September 1989 to cater for the ever-growing need for French language skills in local businesses, to provide expert tuition and advice to students preparing for public examinations and to assist private individuals with any need they may have involving French language, such as purchasing property in France or going to live in France. |

| Demand was such that in January 1992, Hilary Atkin BA, was invited to join French Language Services, followed by Geoff Morris BA, in November 1992 and Chris Sheard in November 1994. A number of sessional linguists, including Ray's daughter, Natalie, are employed to work on specific contracts |

| Over the years, French Language Services, Cottingham has moved into the provision of other languages and now also offers German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish on an "in-house" basis. A more recent development is the provision of demand-led courses in English as a foreign language and courses on English grammar for native speakers. |
